About the Company
Since it began in 1921, Loehmann's has occupied a unique position in the fashion industry; it stands alone as the only national upscale off-price specialty retailer. Loehmann's is best known for its world-famous Back Room, where fashion-conscious women can find their favorite designers at prices that are always 30% to 65% lower than department or specialty stores. In recent years, Loehmann's has expanded its offerings to include shoes and accessories, juniors, fragrances, gifts and intimate apparel. In addition, over 50 of its stores now include complete men's departments.
The first Loehmann's store, located on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, was filled with row upon row of clothes-laden racks. The founder, Frieda Loehmann, was an intimate of the Seventh Avenue designers. She would make the rounds of their showrooms, picking up their overstocks, samples and cancellations. She would pay a fraction of the original wholesale price, always in cash. Women made the pilgrimage from every New York City borough and even upstate to shop at this off-price mecca. Some even learned to anticipate the arrival of new merchandise. Hundreds of women would converge on the store during these "peak arrival" times; it was a ritual that was the basis for Loehmann's famous Back Room Event, a tradition that continues today in virtually every Loehmann's store.
Loehmann's mission today, as it was then, is to offer customers current, in-season merchandise and frequent new arrivals. The designer names and selections are constantly changing, but one thing remains the same... Loehmann's low discount prices.
While Loehmann's remains New York-based, the company now operates in 16 states with over 55 stores. Recently, Loehmann's has opened new stores, and expanded existing ones, in areas such as San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Natick, Massachusetts. Loehmann's 60,000 square foot Manhattan store, which opened in October 1996, remains its flagship and largest store on the east coast. And our Beverly Hills location serves as the flagship for the west coast
